My only brother, Conrad Eugene Raiford, 65, passed peacefully on Tuesday, May 12, 2009, at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro, North Carolina. His funeral will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 22, at Trinity A.M.E. Zion Church. Rev. Dr. Michael A. Frencher, Sr. will officiate.
Conny received his education in the Guilford County public school system, graduating from Dudley Senior High School in 1964. He worked for several years with our father at The Sportsman, the only billiard hall in Greensboro’s African American community. He moved to Newport News, Virginia, and pursued several business ventures before returning to Greensboro, upon which he worked for Cone Mills for more than 27 years.
Conny was such a kind, sincere and gentle soul who exhibited great work ethic. He was a true gentleman and was admired and respected by many. He loved to play chess, watch football, baseball and basketball on television and was a fan of old western movies. He was particularly fond of his chihuahuas and beautiful tropical fish.
A naturally peaceful and quiet man, Conny relished kind people. He considered himself a reflection of others. That’s why he graced others with either an easy smile or his trademark raised eyebrow. He often praised his loyal sister, Janice, during his declining months as she became his advocate and voice in her relentless pursuit of medical interventions.
I will miss you, Conny.
